Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott is the 2007 CardPlayer European Player of the Year after his third-place finish in the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Classic on Dec. 17, 2007 moved the notorious Englishman to the top of the leader board with 3,446 points.
Ulliott's late surge saw him overtake Chris Bjorin, who had dominated the rankings for much of the year after an impressive World Series of Poker run which saw him make three final tables. Ulliott had his most successful year in tournament poker ever in 2007, winning $1.2 million dollars and making five major final tables.
Norway's Annette Obrestad came third in the rankings after winning the World Series of Poker Europe main event in London and taking second in the European Poker Tour Dublin. Russian Alexander Kravchenko, who won a bracelet at the 2007 WSOP and made the final table of the WSOP main event, finished fourth.
The top 10 CardPlayer European players of 2007 are:
1. David "Devilfish" Ulliott - Hull - 3,446
2. Chris Bjorin - London - 3,375
3. Annette Obrestad - Stavanger - 2,608
4. Alexander Kravchenko - Moscow - 2,579
5. Juan Carlos Mortensen - Madrid - 2,496
6. Rene Mouritsen - Copenhagen - 2,472
7. Mark Teltscher - London - 2,344
8. Florian Langmann - Dresden - 2,040
9. Gus Hansen - Copenhagen - 2,034
10. Jeffrey Lisandro - Salerno - 1,964
This is the third year of the award, previous winners were Roland de Wolfe (2006) and Max Pescatori (2005).
OK the U.S. Congress screwed up a lot of people with that dumb ass Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act. Personally, I lost access to my two favorite online poker sites and the sites I now play on have complicated machinations to get my money in and out. I also had a nice chunk of my bankroll tied up with Neteller for nearly a year and I have to write letters to politicians who I wouldn't let in my dog's house. Yes, yes, ever red-blooded American (French, German, Turkish, Canadian, Danish, etc.) poker player has some or all or more complaints about the meddling politicians around the world, who just can't seem to leave us the hell alone.
But I have a new, very personal complaint.
Every time I log into one of the sites I play poker on, I see new promotions to win a seat in Aussie Millions or the European Poker Tour or any number of WPT or WSOP events. I take a shot once in awhile but mostly I am happy to go to my local cardroom on Friday and and to spend the rest of my poker bankroll in online tournaments. But I have had one big travel dream all of my life. I would like to go to Rio de Janeiro for Carnival.
So image my surprise and image the hate-filled nasty, nasty, nasty letter I send my congresslady when I saw the Party Poker promotion for Carnival in Rio next month. PartyPoker is sending eight players to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Me! I should be going! This was my trip to win [insert long-winded, barely coherent rant about politicians, loss of personal freedom and several four and nine letter words that should not be spoked within 300 meters of schools or churches].
Yes, you play poker to win the prize package but once you are in Rio it is pure fun. Hotel, airfare, seats at the grand parade and a big chunk of spending money.
But I live in the land of the semi-free run by brave-less weasels, so I can't open my Party account and play for the dream vacation of my life.
You Bastards!

The BBC Science website has an interesting test that I invite you to take and report back your results. The test lets you look at 20 faces and activate a micro-video of them smiling. The whole test takes less than ten minutes. Your task, should you choose to accept it, will be to decipher if the smile is genuine or fake.
I will suggest that such abilities away from the poker table is, in fact, a good measure of your skill in picking up tells at the table. You see many poker players believe that tells are indicators of whether or not a person has a weak or a strong hand. Wrong!
Tells are signs of a persons emotions and their reactive behavior to stress and anxiety. The change in their pulse or forehead or mouth takes place much faster than the brain processes: "That two of clubs made my flush."
So my point is that practicing and perfecting your reading skills is something that can be and should be done away from the poker table. If you can catch the fake smile or the nervous twitch of the eyebrow; it really doesn't matter if the person is bluffing with 72o or telling you how much they like your new shoes. The physical tells are the same and reading them correctly is your task.
Let us know how you did on the BBC test. My group of 'Poker Buddies' averaged only 12 out of 20; I need to play more poker with them!
Absolute Poker has released a statement following the "independent" audit of their insider cheating scandal. The complete text of the release can be found below.
I want to say a couple of things about this entire incident. First, the audit was not independent, as it was done by the same folks who run the Absolute servers and "sanction" the Absolute site.
Absolute employees tried to cover up the cheating incident they knew had occurred. The evidence stands uncontroverted that the first reaction of everyone at Absolute was to deny and cover-up.
Documents and records that would verify the acts of cheating and identify the employees who cheated were destroyed. The argument that this was inadvertent is not to be believed.
There has been no meaningful punishment to Absolute, they are paying a half a million dollar fine, which comes out of one corporation account and goes into another. They do promise not to do it again, where have we heard this before? They are also going through a lot of smoke and mirror public relations effort to give the appearance of genuine concern.
Too little, too late and just too many lame excuses.
Will this happen again in the future at some big online poker site? Yes, it will. There are hackers, cheats and crooks out there looking for security holes in the cyber-systems.
What everyone should look for is how the next site responds to a security breech. Will they deny and attempt a cover-up like Absolute Poker did or will they deal with the issue openly and honestly. The measure of security is trust and trust is earned. Absolute Poker lost my trust and all this corporate double-speak will not gain it back.
My last question is: Why are there still players on Absolute Poker?
[Text of Absolute statement follows the page break.]
