A Very Odd Request

This is completely out of left field, but you guys and gals are an eclectic group with all sorts of strange hobbies and fascinations.

Can anyone recommend a nice general Common Electronics for Dummies sort of book? More in a hobby sense than in a re-wiring your home sort of practical sense, as what I'm looking for is something to get me up to speed on things like building a coffee maker (on/off switch, solid state temperature sensors, resistive heating elements, etc.) and similar things. Basically a primer on gadgety kind of home electronics applications and how to rig reasonably simple things up from scratch.

Many thanks.

Money in the Bank

I'm running HOT, ladies and gentlemen, and its all because of my own personal cash cow, the Rio SNGs. I decided to return to those lucrative SNGs, in order to boost the bankroll and take a break from PokerStars and thier damn 45-person SNGs. The Rios have been cash cows for me in the past, and I don't know why I ever leave them (although I have a sinking suspicion). Here are the results over 10 such SNGs.

Rio SNGs played: 10
ITM: 7 out of 10
1st Place: 3
2nd Place: 3
3rd Place: 1
Lost: 4
Total Buy-Ins: $230
Total Winnings: $151
ROI: 66%

Now, let me explain the Rios, in case you have not read me extolling their virtues. Rios are 6-person SNGs, with a structure somewhere between turbo and regular (but leaning toward turbo). The buy-in is $23, and the top 3 places pay ($60, $36, and $24), so you have a 50% chance of ending in the money. In addition, if you place 1st 6 times in a row, you win a bonus of (currently) $25,000. If you place 1st or 2nd 6 times in a row, you win $300. In my most recent run, I placed 1st or 2nd in 4 consecutives games, only to be wiped out by a 4-outter on the river. BUT, I still made a good amount of dough.

Here's the part where I whore myself. If you are interested in playing Rio SNGs, you can play them via NOBLE POKER (click here or on the New banner on the right). The players are weak, the site doesn't support Poker Tracker (which is good if you are like me and don't use PT), and they have an incredible 100% bonus, which, in my experience, has been pretty easy to earn. I'm a new affiliate, so I'd appreciate any help!

But really, I did win all of that dough from the Rios. That's not just an ad pitch. I'm just lucky that the timing was right.

So, where was I? Oh yeah. Well, my bankroll is still moving northward, and I hope to continue the trend. I can feel myself souring on Rios, mostly because I've played so many recently and got so close to the bonus. I almost don't want to mess up my record by trying some more. But try some more I will, as I have more bonus to earn (the fee in SNGs count toward the bonus), and I think I am fooling myself here. I've consistently moneyed in these things. All you have to do is play tight. In my most recent loss, it was due to a suckout when there were 6 players still in the game. I should've avoided some earlier hands, and I would've been okay, but I didn't and eventually was willing to push pre-flop with AJ (I was called with KQ, and flopped AJ until his river T).

I think I have to cut this short, but if you haven't done it yet, sign up for the DADI 5: WSOP Satellite at PokerStars. You're gonna love it!

Miscellany

Some news and notes?

There is of course a WSOP Satellite running on PokerStars tonight at 9pm. The diminutive uber-blogger has set this thing up. The end result should be someone joining Ms. Gracie in the winner?s circle.

Shep ?8-ball? Tiltstein has joined the blogging crew over at Poker and Liquor. Surely, the Apocalypse is upon us.

I busted out of the FullTilt WSOP satellite during the 2nd hour last night. I had an above average stack at the break and then moved into the top twenty with a flopped set of tens that turned into a full house. Sadly, tens were my undoing as well. On an 8-high board, I pushed in an attempt to get someone off what I perceived to be his drawing hand. My opponent had KK and not once raised or lead out post-flop. Oddly played, but it worked as I went broke.

I won?t be able to make it out to Vegas for the Summer Classic. It turns out that the family has made reservations at a campground in North Carolina for that weekend and I?m expected to be there. Like, what?s up with that? I?m already taking them all to Disney World in June and now I have to spend more time with them in July???? Sheesh. I will attempt to make up for this with a late-July, early-August visit if I can swing it.

Revisiting tonight?s satellite, I have an appointment at G-Vegas? big game, but may be able to multi-table online and live play for the first time ever. TheRick does have wireless access up in his swank poker den of debauchery, so I?ll at least bring my laptop and see what happens.

This week?s home game may see another semi-local blogger make his first appearance. An invite will shortly go out to the regulars of the game, but this time it will include Quest of a Closet Poker Player author CC. If you haven?t been to his site, go check it out for some very insightful posts on the balancing act we all perform with poker and family life.

Being Dominated is the Key to Success

Not too much pokering yesterday, as ScurvyWife and I spent a good chunk of the day at an artsy-fartsy festival downtown, looking at cool stuff and listening to music. Have to say it's much cooler going to such things after dabbling with welding and bronzing and what-not, as far as having a better idea to what goes into assorted stuff.

I did play a Bracelet Race satellite on Full Tilt after we got home, going out 50th or so. Chipped up early and was rolling along until my AQs couldn't take down QJo, KK couldn't take down KQo, and AKo couldn't take down A6o. That pretty much wiped me out to the point that I had to shove with KQo and got called by A6, which was good enough to send me packing. Whee, poker. I'm probably going to play a bunch of these, hoping that if I keep mashing buttons long enough I might luckbox my way into winning one. If the strength of the field last night is indicative of larger trends, they look to be pretty soft.

Putting the Seal on March

© COPYRIGHT 2006 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Since my last real post on Thursday, I played quite a bit. It was a mixed bag, some good results and some not so good results.

Paradise Rediscovered

As part of attempting to qualify for the Paradise WSOP Main Event seat freeroll for the top 500 point earners for the past week, I played 1,464 dealt hands at the Paradise $2/4 LHE tables from Thursday through Saturday and I ended up with a playing profit of $313.

A funny thing happened at during those three days. My good hands started holding up. Then more hands held up. It really is a novel concept when it comes to winning poker.

Most of the profit came on Saturday when I hit for a $175 day. That was a nice way to start the month and I am convinced it was due to the lunch I had with my wife. We both love Indian food and had an outstanding buffet lunch (if you ever get the chance to have mango pudding, take it). After that meal I came home and played 150 hands for a profit of $153. I may have to make it a weekly outing for Indian food. ;-)

Overall for the week, I ended up playing around 4,600 hands of $2/4 LHE for the week to qualify for the WSOP freeroll at Paradise. I probably finished about 420th out of 500 in points for the week. That is a lot of play just for a freeroll, even as good as this one is (because so many players on't bother showing up). So my new rule is that I will not make it a weekly goal to get into the freeroll, but if I get it in the normal course of playing, that's great.

WSOP Freerolls

As good as my limit results were, my freeroll results were just as bad.

I played in the Poker Blogger Tour WSOP Main Event Qualifying Round #2 on Saturday, finishing 34th of 58. I made a bad decision on the hand I went out on by getting pot committed with pocket 77 and was rewarded justly for my decision. Sometimes you get what you deserve.

On Sunday, my Paradise freeroll lasted about 25 minutes before I was shown the exit. On the 10th hand of the tournament I was dealt black Kings and got a single caller on my 4x BB preflop raise. I managed to get my opponent all-in on a Kh-7c-2c flop and lost when his Tc9c flushed on the river. I was down to T70 in chips, but built it back up to around T1100. At that point, I was dealt red Queens and got all-in with a single opponent all-in on a flop of Jc-7d-3s. My opponent's 2s2h hit its miracle on the turn with a 2c and I was sent home.

March Recap

The month of March was quite a struggle.

I ended up the month playing 11,098 hands at $2/4 LHE and finished the month with a playing profit of $326 for a winrate of 0.73 BB/100.

I also played 621 hands of $1/2 LHE to clear a $100 bonus at Party and made a $33 playing profit (2.66 BB/100). The $100 bonus was the only bonus that I cleared during the month as I spent almost all of my time playing at Paradise without a bonus.

Overall, the bankroll was increased $459 for the month. With all of the play that I put in, the result is not very good. I am not disappointed, though. Given the higher than average amount of bad luck that I had at the $2/4 LHE tables during the month, it is certainly no surprise.

I did play at the Party $2/4 full ring LHE games some in March and the texture of those games has definitely changed due to the addition of of the 6-max games at that limit. There was a time when the Party $2/4 limit full ring games were the absolute best games online at that limit and some of the best games online at any limit. I can tell you that those days are now gone and the Party $2/4 full ring games are now just on par with what you would find at most sites these days. The fishies have clearly migrated to the 6-max games.

RIP, Party $2/4 LHE full ring games. It was nice knowing you...

I'll be spending a lot of time playing at Paradise in April. I do have a $120 pending bonus at Stars, so I will be playing there some during the month, also. The Stars low limit Hold'em games have deteriorated due to their relatively new VIP program, so I'll play there when I can find a juicy table. I'll also be playing some at Imperial Poker/Poker Syndicate (see my April 2 post below for an explanation why).

I'll also be playing in some WSOP freerolls at Paradise and Stars. I probably have about 28 of them that I can enter for 1,000 points a pop. May as well use some of those player points.
